GFCI vs AFCI: What They Do and Where Each One Goes
These two get confused constantly, including by people who should know better. They solve genuinely different problems.
GFCI: protecting people
A ground fault circuit interrupter monitors current going out on the hot conductor against current returning on the neutral. In a healthy circuit they match. If even a small amount goes missing — typically around 5 milliamps — it has found another path to ground, and that path might be a person.
A GFCI opens in a fraction of a second, fast enough to prevent the current from stopping a heart. This is why they exist wherever water and electricity share a room.
Where GFCI protection is required: bathrooms, kitchen countertop outlets, garages, unfinished basements, crawlspaces, outdoors, laundry areas, near sinks and wet bars, and pool and hot tub equipment.
AFCI: protecting the building
An arc fault circuit interrupter looks for the electrical signature of arcing: current jumping a gap. That happens at a loose terminal screw, across a cable damaged by a nail, at a cracked conductor, or inside a failing appliance cord.
Arcs produce intense localised heat, often inside a wall where nobody sees it, and they are a recognised ignition source. AFCI protection has been progressively extended through the code for exactly this reason.
Where AFCI protection is required: most habitable room circuits in modern construction — bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, kitchens, laundry and similar.
Dual function devices
Some areas need both. Dual function AFCI/GFCI breakers and receptacles handle it in one device, which is common in kitchens and laundry rooms where both requirements overlap.
Testing them, properly
Both device types have TEST and RESET buttons, and both should be tested monthly. Press TEST, confirm power actually cuts, then press RESET.
A GFCI that does not trip when tested has failed and must be replaced. This matters more than people realise: the protective circuitry can fail while the outlet continues to deliver power perfectly normally. It looks fine and works fine and protects nothing. GFCI devices have a finite life, generally in the range of ten to fifteen years.
Why they nuisance trip
GFCI tripping is usually moisture: a wet outdoor receptacle, condensation in a garage box, a failing bathroom exhaust fan, or an appliance with degraded insulation. Older motors and some heating elements leak small amounts of current naturally, and a long circuit with many devices can accumulate enough leakage to trip.
AFCI tripping was a genuine problem with early generation devices, which sometimes could not distinguish a real arc from the normal noise of a vacuum motor or certain dimmers. Modern devices are much better. If a current AFCI trips repeatedly, treat it as a real fault rather than a false alarm.
The one thing not to do
Do not replace an AFCI or GFCI breaker with a standard breaker to stop it tripping. It removes protection that exists for a specific, well-evidenced reason. If a protective device keeps operating, it is more likely telling you something true than malfunctioning.

How often should I test GFCI outlets?
Monthly. Press TEST, confirm the power actually cuts off, then press RESET. A GFCI that does not trip when tested has failed and needs replacing, and critically it can keep delivering power normally while providing no protection at all.
Why does my GFCI trip when it rains?
Moisture entering an outdoor receptacle, a damaged cable jacket or a fixture with failed weather sealing. Water provides the path to ground that the GFCI is specifically designed to detect, so it is doing exactly its job.
Can one GFCI protect several outlets?
Yes. A GFCI receptacle wired to its LOAD terminals protects everything downstream on that circuit. This is why a dead bathroom outlet and a dead outdoor outlet can often both be restored by one reset button somewhere else entirely.
