EV Charger Installation in California: Costs, Permits and Load Calculations

California leads the country in EV adoption, and home charging is where the vast majority of it happens. Here is what actually matters when you get one installed.

Level 1 vs Level 2

Level 1 is the cable that came with the car plugged into a standard outlet. It adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. For a plug-in hybrid or a short commute, that is genuinely enough and you may not need anything installed at all.

Level 2 runs at 240V and adds roughly 20 to 40 miles of range per hour depending on the amperage and what the car accepts. This is what nearly everyone with a full battery EV ends up wanting.

What drives the cost

People assume the charger unit is the main expense. It usually is not. The installation cost is driven by:

  • Distance from panel to parking. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is the cheapest install there is. A charger at the far end of a detached garage across a driveway is a different job entirely.
  • Route difficulty. An exposed conduit run in an unfinished garage is straightforward. Fishing through finished walls, crossing a crawlspace, or trenching under a driveway is not.
  • Panel capacity. If there is room and capacity, we add a breaker. If the panel is full, we need a sub panel, a load management device or a service upgrade.
  • Amperage. A 48A hardwired unit needs a 60A circuit and heavier conductors than a 32A unit. Longer runs also need larger wire to control voltage drop.
  • Permit and inspection. Required, and worth having for rebate eligibility.

Hardwired or a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Both are legitimate. The trade-off:

NEMA 14-50 outlet. Cheaper, and the charger unplugs so you can take it with you. Limited to 40A continuous. Use a commercial-grade receptacle, not the cheapest one available — the budget ones are a known failure point under sustained high current.

Hardwired. Supports up to 48A continuous, no plug connection to loosen and heat over time, and required for some outdoor installations. For a homeowner staying put, this is generally the better long-term choice.

When your panel is already full

This is the most common obstacle, and it does not automatically mean a service upgrade. Options in rough order of cost:

  1. Tandem breakers to free physical space, if the panel is rated for them.
  2. Load management devices that monitor total draw and reduce charger current when the dryer, range or air conditioner runs. Since your car sits there for hours, a temporary reduction usually costs you nothing in practice.
  3. Meter collar adapters that pull power ahead of the panel entirely, where the utility permits them.
  4. Sub panel fed from the main, where there is capacity but no space.
  5. Full service upgrade where the load calculation genuinely does not support it.

Be cautious with any installer who quotes a service upgrade before running a load calculation.

Permits and rebates

A new 240V dedicated circuit is permitted work throughout California. Beyond the safety argument, permitted installation is generally a condition of utility and state rebate programmes, and it matters when you sell the house.

Plan for the second car

If there is any chance of a second EV, run the conduit for it now. Oversizing conduit and pulling a second set of conductors while the wall is already open costs a fraction of doing the whole job again in two years.

Can I install an EV charger myself?

A 240V dedicated circuit is permitted work and requires proper conductor sizing, GFCI considerations, correct terminations and an inspection. Beyond the legal position, incorrect terminations on a circuit carrying 40 amps continuously for hours at a time is exactly the condition that starts fires.

How long does an EV charger install take?

A straightforward garage install adjacent to the panel is a few hours. Long runs, outdoor trenching, attic routing or a panel upgrade alongside it push it to a full day. We tell you which yours is before we start.

Do I need a 200 amp service for an EV charger?

Not necessarily. Many homes on 100 amp service charge at full speed once a load calculation confirms the capacity, and load management covers the rest. The calculation should come before any recommendation to upgrade.
