Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping, and When It Is an Emergency

A tripping breaker is the single most common call we take. It is also the most commonly misunderstood, because the obvious response — flip it back on — feels like a fix when it is actually the opposite.

A circuit breaker is a safety device. When it trips, it has detected a condition it was designed to interrupt. Resetting it without finding out which condition just removes your protection while leaving the fault in place.

The four things that trip a breaker

1. Overload

The most common and least dangerous. You are simply drawing more current through the circuit than it is rated to carry. A space heater and a microwave on the same 15 amp kitchen circuit will do it every time.

The tell is timing: it trips when a specific appliance starts, or when you run two particular things together, and it holds fine otherwise. The permanent solution is usually a dedicated circuit for the heavy appliance rather than a bigger breaker. Never, under any circumstance, install a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping. The breaker protects the wire, and a 20 amp breaker on 14-gauge wire means the wire becomes the fuse.

2. Short circuit

A hot conductor touching a neutral conductor. Current takes the low-resistance path, the amperage spikes enormously, and the breaker opens instantly. This is not gradual and it is not subtle: the trip is immediate and often accompanied by a bang, a flash, or a smell.

Shorts come from damaged cable, a nail or screw driven through a wire during a renovation, rodent damage, or a failed appliance. This one needs professional fault tracing. It will not fix itself.

3. Ground fault

Current escaping to ground rather than returning on the neutral. Because a human body is a perfectly acceptable path to ground, this is the fault that kills people, which is why GFCI protection is required near sinks, in bathrooms, garages, outdoors and in unfinished basements.

If a GFCI keeps tripping, moisture is the usual suspect: a wet outdoor receptacle, a failing bathroom fan, condensation in a garage box. Sometimes it is the GFCI device itself at the end of its life.

4. Arc fault

The one people know least about, and the one AFCI breakers exist to catch. An arc is current jumping a gap — across a loose terminal screw, a damaged cable, or a cracked conductor. Arcs generate serious localised heat inside walls where nobody can see it, and they are a genuine ignition source.

When it is an emergency

Stop resetting and call an emergency electrician immediately if any of these are present:

  • Any burning or acrid smell near the panel, an outlet, or a switch
  • Scorch marks, discolouration or melted plastic on a device or the panel
  • The breaker or panel cover is warm or hot to the touch
  • Buzzing, crackling or humming from the panel
  • The breaker will not reset at all, or trips instantly with nothing plugged in
  • Lights across the house dim and brighten together

That last one deserves particular attention. Lights surging in unison usually indicates a lost or open neutral in the service, which lets voltage swing above 120V on one leg of the panel. It destroys electronics quickly and it is a same-day call.

What you can safely check yourself

Before you call, unplug everything on the affected circuit and try the reset. If it holds, plug items back one at a time. If it trips on a specific appliance, that appliance is the fault, not your wiring. If it trips with nothing connected, the problem is in the wiring or the breaker and you need an electrician.

Also check whether a GFCI upstream has tripped. One GFCI receptacle often protects several downstream outlets, so a dead bathroom and a dead outdoor outlet can share a single reset button in the garage.

When the panel itself is the problem

Breakers are mechanical and they wear out. One that trips at well under its rating, feels loose in the bus, or will not reset cleanly has failed and needs replacing with the correct type for that panel.

If your panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco or Challenger, the calculation changes. These have documented histories of breakers that fail to trip under fault conditions, and no repair makes them dependable. An electrical panel upgrade is the only real answer.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripped breaker?

No. A breaker trips because it has detected an overload, short circuit, ground fault or arc fault. Repeatedly resetting it leaves that fault live while removing your protection. Reset once to test. If it trips again, stop and find the cause.

Can I just install a bigger breaker?

Never. The breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it. Fitting a 20 amp breaker on a circuit wired with 14-gauge cable means the wire will overheat before the breaker ever opens, and the wire becomes the weak point inside your wall.

Why does my breaker trip only when it rains?

Moisture entering an outdoor receptacle, a damaged cable jacket, or a light fixture with failed weather sealing. Water creates a path to ground, which is exactly what a GFCI is built to detect. It is a common and very fixable fault.
