What this covers
Recessed and can lighting
Layout planned first, joists located, and spacing set so you get even light instead of scallops and dark corners.
LED retrofits
Swapping old cans, troffers and fluorescent tubes for LED with matched colour temperature so rooms stop looking mismatched.
Ceiling fans
On a fan-rated box, braced to structure. A standard fixture box is not built to hold a spinning load and will eventually let go.
Outdoor and landscape lighting
Path, uplighting, soffit, patio and security lighting on weather-rated circuits with photocells or timers.
Under-cabinet and accent lighting
Kitchen task lighting wired into a real switch leg rather than a plug-in strip hanging behind the toaster.
Dimmers and smart switches
Matched to the LED driver so you get a smooth dim without buzz or flicker at the low end.

Questions
How many recessed lights do I need in a room?
It depends on ceiling height, room size, wall colour and whether the lights are doing general or task lighting. Rather than guess, we lay out the room in California and mark it before cutting, so you can see the plan on the ceiling first.
Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz when dimmed?
Almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver. Old incandescent dimmers do not talk to modern LEDs properly. Swapping to a compatible dimmer usually fixes it outright, and it is a quick visit in California.
Can you install a ceiling fan where there is no existing fixture?
Yes. That means running a new circuit or extending an existing one, adding a fan-rated brace box and wiring the switch, often with a separate control for the fan and light. We do these regularly in California homes.
Is it worth retrofitting to LED?
For anything running several hours a day, yes. The energy saving is real and lamp replacement drops off almost entirely. For a California business running lights twelve hours a day, the payback is usually quick enough to be an easy decision.
Can you install outdoor lighting on a timer?
Yes. Photocells, astronomic timers and smart controls all work well for California exteriors. Astronomic timers are the nicest option because they track sunset through the year without you resetting anything.
