7 Signs Your California Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Most homes built before the 1990s in California were wired for 100 amps or less. That was enough for a refrigerator, a TV and a few lights. It is not enough for a heat pump, an induction range, a Level 2 EV charger and a home office.

1. Breakers trip when you run two things at once

If the microwave and the toaster cannot run together, the circuit is overloaded or the panel is undersized. Frequent tripping is the most common reason people search for an electrical panel upgrade.

2. The panel is warm, buzzing or smells

A panel should be silent and room temperature. Heat and buzzing mean loose connections or failing breakers. Treat this as urgent and call an emergency electrician.

3. You still have a fuse box

Fuse boxes are obsolete, and many insurers will not write or renew policies on homes that still have one.

4. There are no open slots

Moisture in a panel corrodes bus bars and breaker contacts. Scorch marks mean arcing has already happened.

7. You are adding solar or a battery

Most solar and battery systems require a 200 amp panel or a bus bar rated for the back-fed breaker.
